Alternatives to Fastmail?

Greg Grossmeier at

Splitting out this sub-thread on alternatives to FastMail:

From Mike:

@greg and others, naive question: what is the advantage of fastmail over gmail? There' both nonfree IIUC.

@Mike Linksvayer Yeah, still nonfree AFIAK, "just" like gmail, but that's not the only metric.

1) not gmail - just by being not gmail it's an improvement, really

2) supports FLOSS

3) supports my own domain

4) supports xmpp/calendar

5) not horrendously expensive

6) not me maintaining the software

What's another good alternative?

Kolab, perhaps? There's a hosted version at kolabnow.com.

(I have no firsthand experience with Kolab. It's just a thing I have been keeping tabs on.)

Eeeps, sorry about the leaving the same comment twice! I did not realize that my first comment was, in fact, posted here.

(I closed the browser tab after waiting for a confirmation for a minute or so.)

I'm still moving over to hcoop.net - Nonprofit Cooperative, free software loving (and using, and developing). The only downside so far is that it's US hosted in New York, so subject to the laws and intrusions if that country.
