There is the proprietary rpi firmware issue though. I guess the case would also support boards like the banna pi that may be less stupidly reliant on massive firmware blobs to boot.

Maybe you could replace the pi with a Hummingboard.  It uses the same chip as the Novena, the Freescale i.MX6 (single, dual, and quad core varieties), and was made to mimic the pi's form factor.  The Novena crowdfunding campaign has funded a free replacement for the blob currently needed to run the GPU, so it looks very promising from a freedom perspective.

That's the nice thing about this design, as long as the board has the same video output as the PI, same form factor and mounting, and similar power inputs it would work in there.
