Yep that's it, subject to the caveats explained in that page I linked to. The whole issue is that a sane default value needs to be put in a register on the GPU. Then the i915 kernel module picks it up and the intel_backlight works. I understand that a future version of libreboot will handle this automatically when booting and resuming from suspend/hibernate, permanently solving the matter.
