Well, there was p2pU. There's mediagoblin. There's Frostclick. The Free Culture Foundation in general was pretty much dead the last time I looked into it. Free Culture Media is definitely dead. I could probably pretty easily find more examples of organizations and software projects trying to tackle this problem.
