the trick is to learn how to detect lies.  this often takes being confronted by different versions and takes on the same facts, and sometimes accidental slips.
like, Brazilian mainstream media often reports that Venezuelan markets are out of stock on everything, that you can't buy even fuel in the country.
today, they reported that the Brazilian city closest to the border to Venezuela doesn't even have fuel stations (because fuel is so much more expensive in Brazil than in Venezuela), and that people were worried that they couldn't cross the border to refuel because the border was closed.
from that, one can infer that, at least in the city across the border, Venezuelan fuel supplies have been sufficiently stable for Brazilians to make do without gas stations at their end, and that the previous reports were lies.  busted!
