when I was a kid (in the late 1970s) there was a total solar eclipse visble here in Sydney.

I remember using a pinhole in paper to project an image to see it.
(works like a lense - like in a pinhole camera -
it's a safe for your eyes - you look at the projected image, NOT directly at the sun)
If you are actually somewhere fully under the moon's shadow and do it at the right moment, it might look similar to what's on the screens in that photo - it did back then.

unfortunately I missed the eclipse festivals that were on in more recent years in South Australia and Northern Territory
(those were music festivals but still its a great excuse for a party :-)
 and would probably be a great way way to meet lots of friendly travellers from everywhere!)
