Rule: Make multiple copies of your recordings, preferably some off-site.

I've been reading PINAC for quite some time, and apropos of their most recent article, want to restate this.

Here we have a case of a kid recording classroom bullying and then the administration deleting the video, following that up with legal threats to the kid for violating a wiretapping law. If only the kid or his mom had bothered to copy the video before letting the kid go back into school, mom would have that video evidence on hand to show to a judge or the local news channel. You might say the mom could not have known the school administration would be brainless, but it's because she didn't know that she needed a copy. After all, if she already knew they were inept, talking to them was pointless. A corollary to the above rule is this...

Corollary: Make multiple public copies, including some you don't own or control.

If other people (friends or blog readers) have copies, then applying pressure to you to delete yours is pointless. Whether or not you have to erase a copy, you still have access to the data.
