It seems the non-text media facilities are getting more sophisticated. I wonder (have not looked) if WordPress can integrate with another media provider other than the internal library, eg a MediaGoblin site or Wikimedia Commons?

I forget the specific plugins, but I've seen the media library hook into Wiki commons and Flickr.
Looks like a couple https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Category:WordPress_extensions but not in the WordPress plugin directory (don't know how indicative that is) and at a glance not much maintained. There are a ton that find photos on Flickr.
