So, am I correct in assuming that I can't follow someone on another instance of pump.io without giving that instance full access to my account (according to the authorize page).
That seems a bit silly and it was not required with StatusNet. :/

But if you're going to use a remote server as your user interface, you have to give them the option to post the "follow" activity to your own server.

We don't yet have fine-grained authorization (like "just let this server post 'follow' activities for people on this server", but there's an open issue about it: https://github.com/e14n/pump.io/issues/129

You could also do it easily from one of the desktop clients capable of doing that, like Pumpa and Dianara =)
