OK so notifications now seem to be read when menu got closed. However message doesn't show to have gotten read when menubar gets closed.
@arcee Thanks a lot, I haven't. Just looked at the GitHub project, sad that this hasn't been more developed since months back! Will check out if clients become handy or if I should try some cross-posting from GNU Social or Diaspora* if that would work...! :)

It's a whole other experience with a desktop or mobile client. Take a look at the link Arce posted. And also, to the other web services and utilities listed there.
Having little evolution in the core doesn't mean the project isn't evolving every day =)
