Interesting. A bit more at http://www.cnet.com/news/firefox-os-in-flux-as-mozilla-loses-technology-chief-to-startup/
FirefoxOS with commitment to make deals rather than to openness? In degree or kind? Will be interesting to see how plays out.

Indeed it will be interesting to watch how it play out.
More in the press about this: http://www.cnet.com/news/startup-lands-100-million-to-challenge-smartphone-superpowers-apple-and-google/
Tsinghua Unigroup also put out an announcement (in Chinese): http://www.unigroup.com.cn/newscenter/jtxw/2015/0715/158.html so but the bigger news today probably is the same company's 23B bid for Micron.
An immediate analogy could be
Debian : Ubuntu (Canonical) :: FirefoxOS : H5OS (Acadine)
but it is too early to speculate.

I wondered what Acadine means:
In Greek mythology, Acadine was a magical fountain described by the Greek historian Diodorus Siculus. When writings were thrown into the fountain, they floated to the top if genuine, but otherwise sank to the bottom where they were devoured by Hades.
According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acadine which may not be a top-floating article...
