Personally I use something that uses less power for a home server: it used to be a NSLU2, then a SheevaPlug and I'm currently migrating everything to an A20-Olinuxino https://www.olimex.com/Products/OLinuXino/A20/A20-OLinuXino-MICRO/open-source-hardware (in a 3D printed case :) ): they use very little power (<5W), they don't need a fan, they are small enough to fit on a shelf and they cost less than a full PC.

The power supply of the sheevaplug had to be changed after a couple years, but it was known to be failure prone; OTOH finding a 5V power supply for this kind of device is extremely easy.
