I've talked with a friendica dev (friendica has the same behaviour as diaspora) it seems that it is related to the way content is distributed arount: in friendica comments are sent to the instance of the parent post, and then distributed to the instances/users who originally received the post.

In this model, users who only follow the author who shared the post would never receive the comments anyway.
