Re ugly ducklings: I remember in the novel Flicker (https://www.librarything.com/work/217143 but not for everyone), the narrator has seen a woman, Clare, with greasy hair and non-glamorous clothes for weeks and weeks, and only until he runs into a crowd of women with the same sort of look (beatnik?) that he realizes this IS a look, and she's rocking it.

Re YOU LOVE EACH OTHER, I figured she grew up in an almost-convent, and he had that issue of being eaten alive, and both of them were regarded by everyone around them as Icky Other (with but-we-love-you-anyway parents for him), so yeah it would take a while for them to realize anyone could be attracted to them, much less love them romantically.
