A few weeks ago, a friend of mine stopped replying to my messages over IM. However, I would occasionally get messages from her, but very rarely. It seems I could reply to those.

Today we met up for lunch, it turns out she thought I was ignoring her, despite me having left a number of messages, and she thought I was upset with her (I wasn't). Neither of us could communicate, and both of us thought that each was upset at the other! What happened?

Well, she's a Google/GTalk user, and apparently she got a message to "upgrade to Google Hangouts", and did. Around that time, federation seems to have broken, and I'm no longer allowed into the party. (I run my own XMPP server.)

Lame.

I run my own XMPP server and you might find odd that I don't use it to chat to any humans. Although I do use it to chat with my bot jeeves_mobile who is alive and well, at least in 1s and 0s.

Google Hangouts are it for chat on the Google silo now? Well, that sucks.

Thankfully old fashioned SMS still works for reaching me...

Have you noticed how it's always the people defending the open/libre/federated systems who end up using the crappy silos, because others refuse to go open/federated? Why don't WE REFUSE, for once?”

Actualy, I don't use the silo, I don't have a G$ account that I use, I refuse it for all the good reason there is... I STILL have my XMPP client open but I just have nearly all my contact list in the "real world" (outside of FLOSS knight friends, which whom I more use mail than IM) that did changed and used gtalk, so practically it's dead for me ... :'/

in a fit off irony, Microsoft complained about the lack of federation when Google did this. as I recall, Google's response was ,make Skype free and we'll make hangouts free.
