To some people, "reciprocal" can seem to mean "coercive".

Only to those that don't wish to cooperate in the first place, such as the proprietary software developer.

My favorite strawman is "I'm the developer, I should be allowed to choose my license", when not even the FSF says permissive licenses are non-free or should be outlawed.

They are simply saying that if you choose a free license because you value user freedom, there are good reasons for you to choose copyleft, please consider them. Even the FSF chooses weak copyleft on rare occasions.

To me, reciprocal and viral describe different aspects. Virality describes the fact that license compatibility goes strictly in the copyleft direction, reciprocal is just copyleft and applies equally to weak copyleft, where compatibility goes both ways.
