I'd still love to see Maemo 5 take off as a free software project. Still never experienced a better UI. Plus GNU software on your phone, so good.

I wonder how close Maemo is to Debian GNOME?

The packaging was Debian, a lot of the backend components like tracker and telepathy are still around in GNOME. It looks like the shell was something unique https://wiki.gnome.org/Attic/Hildon

I think most of the current FOSS phone efforts (Ubuntu, Plasma Mobile) right now are using Qt?

I wonder if there are enough of us ex-n900 folk to try and make a free software maemo 5 clone, based on an up-to-date debian (or guix ;)) and then use the neo900 as the hardware.

I agree. I feel like the future of phones were back then with the n900 and the direction Android and other mobile OS's that I've seen or used haven't picked up on what maemo had to offer.

@Diane Trout Maemo 5 was pre GTK 3 and was using... what did you call it? The OpenGL'ish GTK thing from back in the day....

But yeah I wonder how well GTK 3 would be adopted to something like Maemo 5...

There's some things about Guix that I think should be slimmed down before moving to a phone, but its probably more important to have a working touch orientated desktop shell first.

There's some information collected here about what mobile support exists https://wiki.debian.org/Mobile
