If this keeps going on, we need to tax the value of each extension as imputed income. That would stop this. The argument over the Fair Market Value of such extensions would result in gridlock in the courts. The chaos would be wonderful. With luck, even proposing getting the IRS involved marginally as a trade-off for such an extension would help kill the idea.

This happens for a simple reason: nothing really new is being invented, so they need to monetize the past. Welcome to the sequel of the prequel of the prequel of the sequel of the saga of Hollywood.
