That's kind of funny :-).  But of course, it never had anything to do with the officers themselves, the same way that the cult of alleged saintliness that was built up around Robert E. Lee never had much to do with Lee as an actual person.  The statues, the base names, the widespread continued use of the Confederate flag even in official contexts: it's all a long-running political propaganda effort to show black people that white America was determined to keep them in their place.  It was never particularly subtle.
