It's astonishing how much damage can result from the fact that most people don't have experience with habitual liars, and therefore mistakenly believe that no one could possibly be *that* untruthful that often.  They don't realize that for such a person, the trust that allows our society to function is simply a friendly host environment offering unique opportunities for the right kind of parasite.
