One step at a time, getting the laptop back to life can be cheap and it's independent of the decision about where to move your new home. The ssd can always be moved to a different machine if you end up not using the laptop so often, and if it's expensive, just buy a normal harddisk, the laptop can be a nice backup/travel/guest/children computer… I always (irrationally?) fear the coming of the day where we cannot buy freedom friendly hardware anymore, so maybe I'm biased.
