The problem with pump.io is similar to the problem with Jabber/XMPP.

There is a load of clients for all imaginable platforms. But they all differ in terms of capabilities. This makes it harder to use the networks and makes users limit themselves to the basic set.

Email is kind of like that. Most people just use webmail now.

I don't see a problem there, as long as there are clear lists of "these clients support voice calling", "thse clients support blackboard", "these support whatever".

I like diversity.

And in the case of pump.io... this is a really young system. Most of the clients already support more stuff than the web UI. Give things time to grow.
