Pretty sure there's someone out there who thinks the biggest failing of Usenet was its inability to monetize.

You know, there's probably a really good blog post in that. Why is it not a major player in online community in 2015? What were its inherent disadvantages?

I think it boils down to a few factors:
1) Required a separate client to access (and Google folded Deja News into Groups)
2) Servers cost money, and were non-trivial to set up.
3) Usenet got the (deserved) reputation as being a place primarily used for binaries distribution.
