It's a little rough I'm just getting The project going

I believe that *some* of that price may cover for the additional expenses of certification of a medical device, which AFAIK is a mix of needed checks that are useful to prevent serious abuses that could put the safety of people in danger and useless bureaucracy for the sake of bureaucracy.

Another part may come from "people are paying for this through an insurance, so it doesn't feel like their money, so let's just increase our margins!" (if medical insurances would cover them, which I don't know). Which makes even more worth of not getting your money.

Everything else is the standard practice nowadays of trying to screw the buyer of your devices by tying them to your "service", stealing their data and preventing them from taking back control. I'd say GO FOR IT!

As a tangent, insurance companies do cover them but they don't just blindly pay whatever some charges: They'll cut it back to something reasonable.

Thanks for the support.

Yes, I think insurance covering the cost (although strangely here in Canada it isn't covered by helthcare but instead by private add-on insurance (Really? something I need so I breath right and don't have a heart attack or stroke.. thats not covered.. really?).

I think things being covered by private insurance companies that can foot a bigger bill then most people if it were out of pocket keeps the price up.

And just so people know I do plan to test things very completely. In fact I'm hoping that at some point a respiritory Therapist or two will contribute. Part of the project will be how to inexpensively build accurate test equiptment to test the machine that gets built.
