Canadians and US Visas
David Chung at 2025-03-29T01:29:00Z
It irks me a little whenever I hear broadcasters stating that Canadians failed to obtain a US visa.
Canadians actually do not require a visa to enter the US with a few exceptions (entry by marriage engagement for example).
I myself took a bit to understand this process too and this is how I understand it:
A visa is permission to present yourself for entry into the country. You normally obtain this document at a consulate outside of the US. Canadians never do this in most cases.
Once at the port of entry, you then request to obtain status to be admitted into the country. They use the visa, if required, and additional paperwork to confirm eligibility to be admitted.
Whenever you leave the country, you repeat the above process if you want to re-enter. Canadians with work or study status skip to requesting re-admittance and never present a visa.
It's more likely in these stories that Canadians are attempting to renew their work or study status -- I suppose all this is confusing to most audiences so they just say "visa".
The thing is though, it is the border officer's prerogative to ultimately determine admissibility. Having a valid visa (if required) and a previously held status does not guarantee admission and re-entry.
I feel there's more to the Canadian's story linked. Normally if you're given a hard time, you'll be given ample opportunity to withdraw your request to enter and voluntarily turn back. My speculation is that the Canadian in this story insisted to remain in the system (perhaps as a way to contest the officer's decision) and they processed the denied entry while keeping her detained. This denied entry is why an entry ban is now in play; a voluntary withdraw avoids this situation.

Dance Mode
David Chung at 2025-05-06T05:25:44Z
I kept hearing praise about the Sign episode from Bluey so finally gave it a watch. Overall a positive reaction from me. I'll just say that I think Bandit's first mistake was hiring Bucky as the seller agent -- so many red flags and the fact that I'm thinking about this after watching this speaks volumes of the quality writing.
The cue where they dance at the wedding reception reminded me of the instrumental break of Straight Ahead for some reason and unlocked early web memories: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=f3Nt0iAu3qw
The cue was too short so I sought after the full version and found it: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=oPGWqhjfF9Y
From this interview with the series composer, it seems there are a few more episodes I should watch: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=Rz7tsWrw4wc

Maurice Ravel's La Valse

An upcoming HSO concert includes this work: https://www.myhso.org/concerts/2025-spotlight-with-your-hso
As usual, I prepare myself for these concerts by listening to the programming on repeat the week prior to the concert and I've been thinking a lot about La Valse.
My interpretation of this work is Dancing Mania occurring at a Viennese ballroom. It starts out as a fade-in to the dance floor with couples dancing as normal. With the lack of a musical conclusion, we see the dancing never ends as we fade-out and transition back to the dance floor again but this time the dancers are now in a dilapidated state and perhaps some of them already collapsed. I love the instrumentation and tonal shift here! We then end with the last few couples madly dancing with what seems to be flames surrounding them until they too finally collapse with the final notes of the work.
I look forward to experiencing this work live!

pmOS 24.12 Scare
David Chung at 2025-01-13T20:57:02Z
I upgraded pmOS to 24.12 on my PinePhone and freaked out when I had no audio interface until I saw the edit under Extra notes in https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/issues/3359#note_459502 .

Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus and Hans Zimmer's Lion King
David Chung at 2024-04-16T01:08:02Z
I was listening to some choral music and upon hearing Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus, I thought to myself, "Hans Zimmer must've quoted this in his Lion King (1994) score!"
Sure enough, someone actually posted a video on it: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=PfAwqJjpxhY
Also, 1994 is 30 years ago!

pmOS Testing
David Chung at 2024-03-20T01:28:59Z
I normally wait for a device to be promoted from testing but I just want to start tinkering with the PineTab2 now that the WiFi driver is available.
pmOS is my OS of choice because of pmbootstrap.
Unfortunately, the documentation is not at all clear on how one installs the OS on testing devices: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/PINE64_PineTab_2_(pine64-pinetab2)
I tried tinkering with pmbootstrap trying to figure out how to write the deviceinfo and APKBUILD files and failing miserably as the pmbootstrap build command kept failing.
But silly me, at the bottom of this Wiki page is a link to an MR: https://gitlab.com/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/merge_requests/4208
All the work is done for me! So just for future reference, the steps are as follows:
- Change current directory into the pmaports git directory (cd ~/.local/var/pmbootstrap/cache_git/pmaports)
- Add the contributor's repo as a remote (git remote add Danct12 https://gitlab.com/Danct12/pmaports.git)
- Checkout the contributor's relevant branch (git checkout Danct12/pintab2)
- Proceed with the pmbootstrap init as usual and now the desired device appears in the possible selection since all the relevant configuration files are now present: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Pmbootstrap#Initialization
- Finally, proceed with any nuanced installation details: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/PINE64_PineTab_2_(pine64-pinetab2)#Installation
- pmbootstrap status will not like that you're not on an official branch so I assume that's expected for testing devices (it didn't like it when the git directory was unclean during my tinkering failures)
