And it will be even better and easier as soon as MediaGoblin becomes an official Debian package. Currently, 0.6 is waiting in NEW, but there are rumours about an upcoming 0.7 Debian package :~)

@Debacle, my blog was there before pump.io, and I didn't want to abandon it. It's my "Speaker's corner", here in pump it's more like the cafeteria, we talk alltogether (hey! I like both!). In the blog I have tags, search, and the URL is more friendly...

OTOH, reposting here the whole content looks repetitive for me, and I try to keep my blogpost announces short so they can cross the pump2status.net bridge and arrive GNUSocial (when it's not possible, I craft a short message there).

This post was short but sometimes I write loooong blogposts... too long for pump (aesthetically, IMO).

I have copy of my blog texts for a future self-hosted blog or whatever can happen to wordpress.com. Thanks for caring!

@larjona@identi.ca Congrats on the setup!

Something you may find is that self-hosting mail is among the most problematic services due to ISPs blocking to avoid malware on their networks (which is a bit silly since there are many more attack vectors these days), as well as large mail providers black-holing such servers resulting in mail being undelivered. Everything else you want to host should be smooth, though.

On the RAID front, the benefit of a software raid is that it is a standard that will work in any other computer. With a motherboard raid, you're at the mercy of that particular chip which can be a challenge when your motherboard dies and it's non-trivial to find an exact replacement.

I'm interested to hear if you find any benefit to the non-free graphics driver. OpenCL could be useful, but if MediaGoblin or video transcoders don't use it, it seems like a freedom (and security) sacrifice for slightly different terminal fonts that will rarely be seen. Keep us updated in any case!

It's looking like a great start for your self-hosting.

I agree: blogs have more visibility than social services at the long term.

People should blog those things worth to remain, no matter if they short or long.
