Uggh

After wrestling with various XMPP programs on my server for the last 6 hours I give up. They all suck. Every. Single. One. They all seem designed with the idea that they'll have their own separate user database which is stupid IMO. Or they offer other authentication methods which either don't work or don't have any documentation on how to make them work. If they can't authenticate real users that exist within the operating system maybe I'll just give up and not have XMPP anymore. Because I'm not going to put up with two password systems.

That's a shame! Sorry to hear it didn't work out.

Seems a bit excessive to say that they all suck just because of that...

I have ejabberd hooked up to pam_unix... it works pretty well. The configuration syntax is kinda garbage though. I can send you my config if you want.

Does it mean you won't be using XMPP anymore?

If "yes", I'm very sorry to see you leave XMPP behind. It's really great standard, even WhatACrap is based on that (although non-compliant). And we need law-like documents (such as what international standards already do well) instead of self-driven homemade "standards", according to Yochai Benkler (see https://libreplanet.org/wiki/XMPP)

If the answer to the question is "no", then can you please tell me what is your new ID/address?
