or make the mask Flash very brightly (with the grin the brightest). Then people will have slowly fading after image of the face of which the grin will persist longest.

guessing the flash needs to be bright enough for the eyes to need to readjust (guessing thats when the "dissapearing" happens?)
xenon flash tube? (eg like in a strobe light or camera flash) .. thats pretty bright though .. could be a bit unpleasent to the viewer
back in the 80s I put together a little strobe light (for use at a small party) with one of those tubes - from memory only a few (not many) $ at a local electronics store
these days there seem to be some pretty bright leds about ,.,, not sure if bright enough for that but probably worth a look if any are (probably even easier to use - no high voltage components or delay for charging a capacitor as is the case with xenon tubes)
