Funny WiFi names?
8 years ago via Dianara To: Public CC: Followers
So I'm about to set up a new wireless network, and I'm tired of the boring names I usually come up with. So, I need your help: what are some funny network names I could use?

I kind of want to use 'WOPR', but that reference only really works if I set the password to 'Joshua'.

Kickstarter-funded textbook "Producing Open Source Software" 2nd Edition Now Finished
8 years ago via Dianara To: Public CC: Followers
As a backer of the Kickstarter campaign, I was a little disappointed to learn that the 2nd edition of "Producing Open Source Software" would not be released in 2013 as originally planned. In particular, the delay meant that I could not recommend it to the teacher of my Open Source Development class that I took in 2015 - the first edition was outdated and the second edition, though web-accessible at the time, was unfinished and volatile.
Glad the book is out now, at least as a web site. When the dead-tree version becomes available, I will gladly add it to my library, knowing that I can access the source code online.

So my printer has telnet
8 years ago via Dianara To: Public CC: Followers
So I just found out that my printer accepts telnet connections (thanks nmap!). It has two accounts - 'admin' and 'user' - both of which have the default password 'access'. Any fun things I should try before disabling telnet?

How to detect and get rid of bots on my home network?
8 years ago via Dianara To: Public CC: Followers
So I just checked my IPv4 address at Am I Hacked?, a service that lets you know how many times your IP address has tried to connect to their honeypots. I sorted the results by date and made a bar graph.
I'm not 100% certain that this data actually represents connection attempts from my home network because we have a dynamic IP address. It is worth noting that my ISP has not contacted me, which suggests that they have not detected significant suspicious activity.
My first instinct is to try and identify which device(s) on my network might be infected. I don't think my router supports any kind of activity logging, so that means examining every device.
Our Windows computers have Norton antivirus and firewall software, provided free by our ISP.
Our Linux computers run GUFW for firewalls and do nightly antivirus scans with ClamAV.
Our phones and tablets (running Android and Ios) have no antimalware software that I know of.
We also have various other internet-of-insecure-things devices.
Also, my router (a mid-2009 Apple Airport Extreme) is going to be replaced soon with the far more capable Turris Omnia.
Any recommendations?

A toast
8 years ago via Dianara To: Public CC: Followers
Just listened to the zeroth episode of Late Night Linux, the new podcast from the creators of Linux Luddites. I know it wasn't a full episode - just a short thing created to ensure that their software was working - but I must say I was hoping for something a bit longer. I propose a toast to the new show: may it last longer than the old one while remaining just as entertaining, and may Paddy make frequent appearances even though he is no longer a host.
My cat loves pea soup
8 years ago via Dianara To: Public CC: Followers
My cat Cedric has always been a real foodie. I've never met a cat as obsessed with food as he is. But it never occurred to me to give him pea soup, until a few minutes ago when I found him licking my dirty soup bowl.
Anyone else have a cat with unusual tastes?

βSmart companies protect their data while giving staff a first-class experience with the latest tools,β said Witoff. βWeβve been able to efficiently and securely manage a suite of modern, well maintained internal applications that our team loves by deploying these applications through Replicated. Funny, I thought installing software locally was a common occurrence. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned.

Learning FontForge
9 years ago via Dianara To: Public CC: Followers
Learning how to use FontForge for my Nina Improved font project. FontForge offers so many features, its GUI is more than a little intimidating for someone new to making fonts.
Luckily, since this is a fork of an existing font, most of the work is already done. I'm mostly just fixing invisible errors that FF autodetects.

This is nice! [Snowdrift.coop](https://snowdrift.coop) uses that font (along with other material from Nina.) Please post a note here if you made some progress on that.Anyone want to buy some LaserDiscs?
