Pump.io allows long posts too, HTML or Markdown formatting (depending on the client), mentions (some clients) and posting images. So it's much more flexible than Twitter :)
Some limitations (temporary, I hope): support of hashtags is not implemented yet, and "sharing" a post only shares to your followers (even if the post was public).
If you want your notes to be automatically posted in your Twitter profile, you can register in pump2tweet.com and link your Twitter account there (long posts will be shortened).
