Getting elected takes salesmanship and lots of fundraising. Actually doing the job requires a different set of skills. The result is what you see around you.Lois Chan-Pedley, Andrew E likes this.
this. Everyone has made really good points, but this is currently a huge part of the problem.
My husband ran in the last provincial elections and I managed his campaign. we went to loads of events and met many candidates/elected representatives behind the scenes. people who are smart, critical, compassionate, &c. are typically not good at marketing themselves on that scale. In a rare scenario, you have someone who can do both, like Dr. Andrew Weaver.
But it really is two discrete jobs - courting votes and funds, and running a province/country. Electoral finance reform (e.g. banning corporate donations) will be a big piece of the puzzle.
another piece of the puzzle, at least for us in BC, is the whip. Political parties force (cajole, coerce) their elected representatives to vote along the party lines, often going against the people they represent and their own conscience. The documentary "Whipped" describes the process a bit. It is very, very weird to see awesome people get elected for the first time and then vote against what they stood for.

Another way to put it: the people and ideas are mixed up. When we're choosing representatives, we're forced to choose between people who display some sort of excellence or competence, and people who advocate for policies that we actually want to see implemented.
Again, it's the wrong place to be making the choice, and it doesn't have to be that way anymore. We shouldn't have to choose between people and ideas.

Not the worst, but still, fuck closed companies. I've never treated a person in such a manner, and the rate of growth of a company wouldn't change that.
It is, of course, part of the systemic issues in startup/tech/Silicon Valley/whatever. A transparent company, dedicated to human dignity, would not have this issue. This conversation predates GitHub, there is no excuse they can give that mitigates their choices.
