Bradley Kuhn recently me asked me what the plan is with pump.io. He pointed out that there a number of UI bugs with the Web interface, as well as some essential federation issues (for example, how comments don't get distributed to all followers).

As most of you know, I've taken another full-time job, and pump.io has become a side project for me. A beloved side project that matters to me very much, but it's no longer what I spend all day working on.

When I do have time to work on it, much of my work is system administration. E14N has some money still, but there's not any new money coming in, so I have to use what's left sparingly. Using cheaper resources more wisely with more efficient software is a big investment for me right now -- it means that we can keep these services running almost indefinitely.

The good news there is that this has mostly been a success. From a peak in 2011, the cost of running the servers E14N uses has gone down two orders of magnitude. That's a huge step.

That also means that I find myself with more time to work on the core software and supporting sites.

Another big step is the incipient Social Web Working Group which I will be co-chairing. The group has a mandate to build a social data format, a client-to-server API, and a server-to-server protocol for social interaction. It's likely that the resulting suite of standards will bear a close resemblance to the current pump.io API, and I definitely intend to track it.

Bradley asked me, "What's the plan?" and I'm going to take this opportunity to sketch out a plan for where pump.io is going.
    1. Over the next week, I'm going to take the current state of pump.io and release it as version 0.3 and start the 0.4 development. Yes, I realize there are still bugs outstanding, but it's probably time to just stamp it and move on.
    2. In the same time, I'm going to deal with the long list of pull requests and open issues with pump.io. The PRs will either get a reply, get pulled to 0.4, or closed. The issues will get put into milestones for 0.4 or "maybe later" or "probably never".
    3. I've been working on the Facebook bridge for pump.io, and I'd like to get that operational before starting any other development work.
    4. My next project will be a Github bridge to share data about commits, issues, and pull requests to accounts on pump.io. I think that will help with some visibility of the development activity.
    5. I'm going to convert the pump.io codebase to CoffeeScript. This may sound radical, but it's mostly a mechanical process with js2coffee. CoffeeScript is a mostly syntactical transformation of JS, and it's really a lot more fun to write. All the regular NodeJS libraries and modules work fine with CoffeeScript, and the installation process will stay the same (no coffee binary needed).
    6. I'm going to upgrade the pump.io dependencies -- Backbone, Bootstrap, Express, etc. A lot has changed in the last few years, and I'd like to keep up better.
    7. Start knocking down bugs in the core software -- mostly concentrating on distributed conversations and the notifications in the Web UI, but seeing if there are others that can get fixed.
    8. I'd like to release an 0.4 version by September of this year.
Finally, I'd very much like to do a Kickstarter for the home pump server I discussed last year. I think it could be a lot of fun, and really help people get onto the network.

I appreciate everyone's attention to pump.io. I know that you've all put a lot of work into this platform, and I really appreciate it. I especially love that there are so many new clients and tools for the platform -- having that kind of ecosystem has been especially important to me.

And everyone who's put their online social presence into an E14N server -- believe me, it's appreciated. You are literally the lifeblood of this network, and making things work right for you is why I do this.

There is a bridge to StatusNet/GnuSocial. What would be great would be if GnuSocial added a Pump plugin on their side to have transparent federation, not bridges.

Evan, first of all, in case you didn't see my later comment after my post, I want to link to it here. My main point there is that we need to start thinking about pump.io as a community-oriented volunteer project now, and that's a good thing. Everything will take longer, but such projects have a long history of producing much better, longer-lasting results that VC-funded stuff.

I don't have a lot to give, but I'd happily give $5 toward a Kickstarter. But, if you're talking about what I think you're talking about, I suggest you team up with the FreedomBox people and see if they have money left.

I've been critical of FreedomBox because it took on too much. It tried to make a home server for all network services everyone could imagine where 'hard reboot' was the only sysadmin task. But, pump.io actually seeks to be what the FreedomBox said it would be on the social networking part, so you should at least talk with them about helping you with fundraising.

Related to that, I encourage pump.io to apply to be a member project of Conservancy. (Of cousre, as a member of our Evaluation Committee, you'd have to recuse yourself of course from discussion about joining post-applying.) That would bring to bear the (albeit) meager resources of Conservancy to help with your fundraising and other efforts. We may be even able to get you gratis VPS's for pump.io if you don't have them already

As you know from your work on the Eval Committee, no one eval committee member can assure acceptance of an application, but I would strongly support your application and I expect other eval members would to. The downsite for you is it would mean E14N letting go of the project, which may be just too painful to consider after all the work you put into.

Evan, thnk you again for all you'e done: since we started autonomo.us, I truly think you are the only one who did more than "just talk" about what freedom for network services should be. You have worked for almost a decade now non-stop to make it happen. While we don't have a solution, you put a lot of great code out there and our community learned a lot. True federated social networking is one of the hardest technical problems our community has ever tried to solve, so any progress forward is impressive.

Thank you, Evan, for all you have done. You are a true hero of software freedom. (And I'll be nominating you for the FSF Award for the Advancement of Free Software, BTW, and I hope others will too. :)

There seems to be a lot of bloo bloo bloo from tech companies about the breakdown of trust from users after the Snowden releases since last summer. People interviewed at the RSA conference imply that organizations like EFF that are raising awareness are in fact polarizing the conversation and preventing any kind of resolution.

To those companies I say: fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck youuuuuuuuuuu.

You knew it was wrong to spy on your customers or to allow a third party to do so. You went along, over and over, with illegal and unconstitutional attacks on the Internet.

You did the wrong thing but you thought it was all going to be OK and that you'd never be caught. You got caught.

You don't deserve the public's trust. You're going to have to spend a long time earning it back. Maybe a full and honest apology, followed by a commitment to users' privacy and clear policies about government access to user data.

Own it, and mean it, and at some point you'll move past it.

We rented some Clone Wars DVDs for the kids over the weekend. They were good for starting some discussions; not good for much else.

It's clear from the tone of the story that the violence has lower stakes because the main combatants are droids on one side, clones on the other. So blowing up a few hundred soldiers with giant laser cannons is no big deal.

We've spent some time talking not only about what we consider a "person" in our family (clones and AI qualify), but also how you treat people in a war, and how it's easier if you think of them as not people.

All in all, pretty heavy stuff for our 5- and 8-year-old. I'd probably avoid this series in the future for a while.

There are some very heavy themes in the series. Anakin's growing mistrust of the Jedi; the way in which Palpatine comes to recognize Anakin's potential to betray the Jedi order; Asoka's difficult apprenticeship under Anakin and her own struggle with aggression. I would see this as suitable for 12+ in order to have a solid discussion of the heaviest themes.

  • We don't follow the easy path, but it's fun! (and better, IMHO)

    Laura Arjona Reina at 2014-01-12T18:11:18Z

We (my husband and me) try to educate our son on that when something is broken, first we try to repair it, if it is not possible, then we try to give it a second life, etc. We (broke* and) repaired together clothes, toys, books, computers... We have used broken things to make new toys, created costumes... When we want to do something we look first at the materials we have at home.

( * sometimes things break accidentally, other times, when trying to figure out new ways of playing or trying to open them to see their parts. Toys are for playing and learning, and that includes a bit hacking too, isn't it?).

I don't buy a different type of biscuits or flakes or whatever until he finishes the last one he chose. If he's bored, we play with combinations or decorations to make them more fun.

When we go to do the shopping, first we make a list at home. If there are temptations in the mall, then I can say "we didn't come here to buy that, it's not in the list. If you want it, next week, when we make the list, we talk about it".

We borrow books and films from the library, handle them with care (no hacking allowed with those ones!), and return them back, almost every week. I wish there were similar places as libraries, but for toys! (well, we have the park, where everybody must share the toys he/she brings, but it's not the same).

These may look like small things, but it's incredible the pressure of our culture: "is it broken? Throw it and buy a new one" or "We need to buy this in order to make that", or "I don't like this anymore, let's buy a different thing". You don't realize until you try to follow a different path! Or until you have a son/daughter and he/she comes with those ideas, and you wonder "from where did he/she learned that?".

We'll see for how long we can resist. Anyway, every day I give thanks, because our son means a daily opportunity for rethinking our world, and trying to do my best at explaining it, and making it more similar to the world that we would like to live in!

Really nice post and way to educate your child :)
But I more wanted to comment about the "library for toys". I'm not sure it's the kind of "toys" you're searching for, but for board games, you can find a lot of stores where you can play in the shop or rent them. That's usually not to expensive and most of all, you can have advices from the people working there to discover new board games which are not very popular or even not translated in English (in this case, play in the shop to be sure to find someone answering your questions about the rules ^^ ) .

    Guillaume Smith at 2014-01-13T00:10:26Z

    depends what you call "easy"

sometimes its easier to improvise with something lying around at home than to go to the hassle of going to a shop and possibly not being able to afford it anyway! I don't really like shopping and absolutely hate waiting. :-)

if its a choice between trying something TODAY using whatever I find lying around or waiting (to buy/afford/have shipped) the former is is the one that is far more likely to result in anything worthwhile! - if there is more than a day's wait (usually the case for online shopping), my motivation evaporates! (and that ends up being put off .. and put off .. and forgotten)

often for me doing/making something myself is the only way to actually get it done!

I really find it hard to understand why so many people are so obsessed with shopping and throwing out stuff. I don't see any fun in either!

That's a great way to raise a child.  My creative parents raised us similarly, and I still believe I can make pretty much anything I set my mind to.  It is economical and fun, but I think figuring out how to make things also helps children to learn critical thinking.

When my child was small, we used to go to a drop-in centre near where we lived in Toronto.  There were lots of toys and kids to play with there. I heard of at least one toy library that I believe was organized by a parent group, but we only found out about it when we were moving, so I really don't know how it worked.
