I checked the transcript of the video and Mark Shuttleworth definitely committed to Free software in the Edge phone:Simon: So what’s going to be in there? That’s all going to be free software?
Mark: Yes, we’ll ship this with Android and Ubuntu, no plans to put proprietary applications on it. We haven’t finalised the silicon selection so we’re looking at the next generation silicon from all major vendors. I would like to ship it with all Free drivers.James Bryce Clark, Blaise Alleyne, James Robertson, Scott Sweeny and 1 others likes this.

Simon, I want to believe you are right with regard to Mark Shuttleworth, i.e. that his ultimate goal is software freedom, and he is just making different strategic choices than others. But with them even making proprietary software in house (i.e. Ubuntu One, and Launchpad earlier) I have a hard time doing that.
That was the main topic of our one hour conversation, FWIW :-)Simon Phipps at 2013-08-03T15:33:23Z

It is unfortunate you didn't record that conversation :-) It would have been very interesting. But I guess with the mic on it wouldn't have been as interesting :-)

I made that up. For me, it means that it's an issue that's significantly different from what my design goals for pump.io is, and pull requests that "fix" the issue will probably not be merged. It's intended to warn people from working on something that probably won't become part of core.James Bryce Clark likes this.

I've been working on this lately:
Stats analysis is an application which utilizes federated SPARQL queries to gather RDF Data Cube observation values from different endpoints based only on user's selections (independent, dependent variables, and reference period). The R language for statistical computing is employed to perform statistical analysis and visualizations. The Shiny application and server bridges the front-end Web user interface with R on the server-side in order to compare statistical observations, and stores analysis results in RDF for future research.
* http://stats.270a.info/
* http://csarven.ca/linked-statistical-data-analysis
It is version 0.1 (or maybe even less). So go easy.
Basically it gathers data from different statistical sources and does some analysis on it. Here is one that's most likely not interesting, but it will give you an idea:
http://stats.270a.info/analysis/worldbank:SP.DYN.IMRT.IN/transparency:CPI2009/year:2009
Independent variable from World Bank
Dependent variable from Transparency International
Reference period year 2009
Currently, it looks into following Linked Datasets:
* World Bank (only Indicators)
* European Central Bank
* OECD
* FAO of UN
* Transparency International
It can be extended simply by adding more query endpoints.
I plan to add IMF, BIS, and Eurostat soon.
Provenance is always kept intact (see "oh yeah?" link).

Everyone has a bad day at the office occasionally. There would be a real problem if there was a consistent pattern of rude and offensive behaviour. I don't know the bloke so that is for others to decide.I think, if you were a developer and you'd have to deal with him this is really no fun. But in my opinion it's important to have such contrary characters like R. Stallman (in a different way) or L. Torvalds. This give people a lot of matter to bat around. Maybe this let's pop up new ideas.
Let's put it this way: If it were not for him, I would have missed a lot of interesting Linux related threads, cause the usual suspects didn't care to write about it. And yep, he makes me chuckle now and then.
But this is no reason to take him as an example - for definitely no one. Zack's comment proves, even in FOSS circles there are the same fools, like everywhere else, who can't reflect. That's humans. ;)

One thing I almost forgot to mention: pump.io is supposed to be part of a network of software. There are a lot of things you probably want to have, and they're not here.
I feel like a few hackers have jumped in with both feet on this recently, and I admit that I've had a lot of fun building sites like ih8.it and openfarmgame.

Show all 5 repliesTwo levels of comments would be good... I think I weighed in on this issue at some point. Regarding RSS/Atom feeds you could write a service to provide these, I think.I'm not a developer. Using an API is too hard for me (so it's useless, at least without a dedicated lib for my favorite language)), RSS is way better cause it's simple. I also have many people reading my dents without having an account here. They use RSS readers for this. RSS is needed like hell!Cyber Killer at 2013-07-14T06:51:09Z

Please NO mult- level comments, it's confusing and usually leads to an endless tree of comments in comments of comments, because everyone presses the comment button on the last comment and never on the post. It's a big feature of Pump.io to have just one level of comments and sharing comments if you share a note. Please don't change this.axel668 (inactive) at 2013-07-14T07:47:17Z
