BTW, a health insurance company told me today that it's completely impossible to correct an inaccurate invoice, or issue a corrected invoice for any period. Seriously. They cannot correct erroneous invoices; they just tell you a corrected total over the phone but provide no documentation.
As always, they blamed the "computer system" doesn't "allow regeneration of invoices".
I almost asked for a copy of the source code so I could fix it. OTOH, I don't know COBOL so it'd be an uphill battle to fix it, I suspect.

I hate the phrase "but maybe their computer system only allows that", like it's some immutable black box that no humans had any input into.
If I complain about that turn of phrase I invariably get the answer "Can *you* do any better? Let's see you make a better system?". Sure, just give me the hundreds of millions of dollars that probably went into this thing, and I'll show you what they could have done. Especially annoyed with this discussion when there are existing competing systems that already do thing X better or at all.Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) at 2013-10-04T03:07:50Z

I was busy talking to people leaving together for BART at an event last night, so I forgot to take my laptop. First time I've ever came close to losing one (other than the time I was held up, and the robber ran away rather than shooting me, I guess).
I got it back today, but I was somewhat surprised how serene encryption and recent backup made me feel; almost didn't care at all. Do those things if you haven't. :)Tyng-Ruey Chuang, Aleksej, Greg Grossmeier, Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) and 3 others likes this.

I started LUKSing all my partitions after losing a laptop in a taxi. Backups came because I have changed computers and crashed hard drives too many times. Anything that matters is in some git repo.

Paul, I'll put your account on my list of accounts to delete. Just to be clear: there are going to be no new identi.ca accounts, so once you're gone, you're gone. Let me know if you do want to stay.
I have put some time and effort into preserving important URLs on the site. In particular, notices URLs, conversation URLs, and user profile URLs. However, when you transfer to a new piece of software, a lot of stuff doesn't stay. So things like the search results page, or the user replies page, are somewhere else.
This is new software, though, and sometimes I get it wrong. If you see particular URLs not working, let me know. If you see a class of content URLs that you think can and should be redirecting, let me know that, too.
Not all user accounts were converted to the new platform. The ones that weren't will have downloads available on archive.org, and I'll try to redirect URLs there if possible.
My priorities for development are to keep this a living, active platform. But I also want to preserve the past and keep us part of the fabric of the web. So: no intention to throw things aside.Bob Jonkman, William L. Anderson, Steven Rosenberg, Stephen Sekula and 3 others likes this.

An interesting and valid point. I see two possible issues, one technical and one societal. Making links migrate with account movement might be workable at first. ( say one migration) but as time passes and more migrations and/or renbranding occurs the links to links to links could create a real mess. Being a technical issue I'm sure this could be solved.
The societal issue is the fact that many view microblogging as transient. Here today but in a month? Who cares what was said or linked to is old news or just irrelevant. I suspect that not too many people would cry out if things like pump.io only had a 6 month memory. Things move fast on social media, stuff stale dates quickly. This view of things may create a lack of will or interest to solve the linking problem.
Quite honestly I wouldn't have cared if @Evan had lost my entire identica history in the move to pump.io. for me and I suspect many others this is water cooler talk, and thus not really worthy of archival efforts.

LavaBit, email service Snowden supposedly using, shut down: http://boingboing.net/2013/08/08/lavabit-email-service-snowden.htmlMy Fellow Users, I have been forced to make a difficult decision: to become complicit in crimes against the American people or walk away from nearly ten years of hard work by shutting down Lavabit. After significant soul searching, I have decided to suspend operations. I wish that I could legally share with you the events that led to my decision. I cannot. I feel you deserve to know what’s going on--the first amendment is supposed to guarantee me the freedom to speak out in situations like this. Unfortunately, Congress has passed laws that say otherwise. As things currently stand, I cannot share my experiences over the last six weeks, even though I have twice made the appropriate requests.
What’s going to happen now? We’ve already started preparing the paperwork needed to continue to fight for the Constitution in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. A favorable decision would allow me resurrect Lavabit as an American company.
This experience has taught me one very important lesson: without congressional action or a strong judicial precedent, I would _strongly_ recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States.
Sincerely,
Ladar Levison

My mis-interpretation of paperwork sounds kinda tinfoil-hat'ish, but it seems one can never have too much tinfoil on their head these days.
I didn't respond to that initially because the reasonableness of that assumption depressed me. For all we know that very well may be the case at some point.
